Storage Pods
It used to be that you could tell if someone was moving in or out of your neighborhood if there was that big yellow Mayflower truck in front of the home. But the newest "fad" in moving are those big white bins that have "P.O.D." on the side sitting in front of the home of someone who is moving in or moving out. "P.O.D." stands for "portable on demand" storage and it is a brilliant new approach to moving.
The approach is simple. The family has a P.O.D. unit delivered and left at the house. They are rented by the day or even by the week or month so the family has all the time they need to load up their possessions into that big white structure. A P.O.D. unit resembles a huge storage shed or like someone left the back of a truck back there without the wheels or the cab. When the family is ready, the P.O.D. operators, come by, load up the P.O.D. unit and drive it to the new location and the family unloads it. The family unpacks at their leisure and then returns the P.O.D. unit to the operators and pays for the rental.
This approach to moving is creative, interesting and functional for many families. For many it is both preferable to using a moving company and quite a bit less expansive. But the cool thing about P.O.D. units is that there are lots of ways they can benefit your life even if you are not moving across town or to another city entirely. The operators of P.O.D. rental companies are not fussy about how you use them. As long as you don’t do anything illegal or damaging to the units (which you would pay for anyway because you do pay for insurance when you rent a P.O.D. unit), you can use it for any purpose you want.
There are circumstances where you need some auxiliary storage near the house but you don’t want to buy a permanent shed to have on property. Many towns or homeowners associations have rules against permanent structures so by bringing in a temporary structure such as a P.O.D. unit, you can have that overflow storage for a week or a few months and then have it taken away when the need passes. Examples are when you must store a college student's furniture between semesters for the summer or if you have to get the furniture out of the house for a week or so while remodeling takes place. You don't need to rent an entire storage unit for this need so renting a P.O.D. unit for a few days or week is a great answer.
Keep this new approach to moving in mind for those times when you need a temporary structure around the house that someone will bring to you, drop off and carry away the next day no questions asked. It is another option to your storage needs that can fit many specialty situations neatly and take care of the problem without any long term commitment.
